We schedule 45 to 60 minutes for the initial evaluation with the therapist. We spend most of the time accessing your child and allow the remaining time with you to gather information about your child. Afterwards, the therapist will conduct a follow up discussion with you about the results of the evaluation and answer any questions that you may have. It is important to note here that siblings cannot be present either during the evaluation or discussion of the results. Please make child care arrangements for your other children.
Also, most parents prefer that their child is not present during the discussion of the evaluation. If this is the case then bring another adult who can supervise your child in the waiting area. Leaving your child in the waiting area with a sibling is also discouraged. Other options you may consider would be to list your concerns in writing to the therapist or we can arrange for a discussion over the phone.
Most of the evaluations consist of several standardized tests to identify areas that are important to your child development and well being. If it is appropriate, this information is compiled into a treatment plan to address the needs of your child.
For some children who do not cooperate well during testing the therapist will use structured and unstructured clinical observations. This is especially true if your child is an infant or toddler. We also encourage our parents to be present during this time to provide additional information and insight about their child. Your presence will allow your child to feel comfortable and provide you the opportunity to observe his or her responses. Our goal during the evaluation is to make sure that your child is not frightened while obtaining the best assessment possible.
Before you come to the clinic let your child know what they will be doing. Most tests resemble a type of playing a game where your child is the player. They need to know that it is safe and will not hurt. Actually, this usually turns out to an exciting and positive experience for both mom and child.
If your child is older then you will want to let them know that the therapist will be looking at how they use different muscles, how they use their hands and eyes. Also, this will not hurt.
Our staff will provide all the forms that you will need before your visit to the clinic. Be sure to provide all the information that is required on the form since this will be used to introduce you and your child to the therapist.
When all has been completed we want you to feel that this has been a good use of your time and that you have received a greater understanding of your child’s needs along with a service of value.
Sincerely,
The Therapeutic Life Skills Team
